The 4th of July was a great time. The City of Escondido had nothing but wonderful things to say about our effort. There’s a lot going on throughout the Post, please jump in and help. Please don’t wait to be asked. I want to invite every one of you to my retirement ceremony on the 4th of August onboard the Midway at the foot of Broadway down San Diego. It starts at 10:00 AM, but be there by 9:30 to be seated before the ceremony begins. There will be a reception at the Post afterwards starting at 1:00 PM and going into the evening. See you there.

The planning is over and the party is about to start but we need you to sign up now before September 27th for our annual Oktoberfest dinner and dance. We promise you one of the very best times you have ever had at the Post on a Friday night. The date to remember is October 6th from 5:15 PM till 10 PM. Dinner will include recorded German music and will be served from 5:30 to 6:45. It will consist of fresh grilled German bratwurst, fresh grilled German knockwurst, hot fresh made sauerkraut, German potato salad, just like grandma used to make, 4 bean salad and a choice of warm buns or dinner rolls. Desert will be 2 layer German chocolate cake and hot coffee.
Live music starts at 7 PM furnished by the best Oktoberfest band in southern California, Roger Kendre and the Villagers in full Bavarian lederhosen costumes playing your favorite polkas, waltz's and for all you die hard Oktoberfesters, the famous Chicken dance. Full bar service will be furnished by your favorite German Oktoberfest maidens, Deon and Irene in their favorite German, pheasant girl blouses. German draft beer, Lowenbrau by the pitcher only and ice-cold bottles of that famous Heineken's beer will be available.
You can get your admission tickets now by turning this reservation form. Sorry, we can only honor the 1st 100 pre-paid at $10 per person because of our limited clubroom floor area and fire laws. So be quick and sign up now. Make sure you have your reservations made early and receive your admission tickets at the bar from anyone of our helpful bar staff: Reservations received after September 27th will be $15.00 per person.
Boys State – Carl Asher
Congratulations to our Boys State Delegates. They completed the week at Cal State Sacramento in fine fashion. A special word of congratulations to Anthony Nutter of Escondido High who was elected as a Boys State Senator and will be attending Boys Nation in Washington DC. I hope to have him visit our August meeting to give us a report of his experiences at Boys State and Boys Nation.
The Post has agreed to sponsor a Boys State Delegate from the Escondido Charter School. This will make five delegates that we sponsor. I anticipate the cost per boy for the program to be around $400 to $450 dollars. I will be sponsoring a fundraiser in the near future to add some money to the Children and Youth program to help offset the costs. District 22 Chairman, Scott Williams of Post 434 assures me that we can have the 5th billet.
Law and Order – Carl Asher

Once again your Post excelled at the Department Convention Law and Order program. Post 149 was awarded the "Best Program Report with Post over 1000 Members." You should be very proud. Thank you for your continued support. I will be presenting the award to the Post Commander at the August meeting. Come in and see us. I will be contacting the Escondido Police and Fire Departments in September to start the 2006 Award event. I call upon you, the members of Post 49 to support this very special program.

The 4th of July got off with a BANG and ended with a cluster of cheers for the Red, White and Blue. Everyone is looking forward to next year’s event, bigger and better. Thanks to all who helped out.
The first District meeting is being held at Post 149 on July 30 at 9:00 A.M. A light meal will be served. The Auxiliary held their Organizational meeting on July 6th. The 2006-2007 budget will be passed out at our next meeting on August 3rd. Don’t forget to come to the Auxiliary’s August breakfast. We will be serving a Mexican style breakfast. Remember the Red, White and Blue, and may God Bless.
Remember These Dates: August 3rd – Auxiliary meeting at Post 149 at 7 PM, August 6th – Auxiliary Breakfast with Linda, August 9 – Auxiliary burger night
Auxiliary Membership – Irene Gustafson

We finished our Membership year with 103.26% thanks to all of you that renewed and to the new members. I was not able to attend the Convention, however I understand that Unit 149 got a few awards and they will be presented at the District Meeting on July 30th.
Reminder: If your 2005- 2006 dues have not been paid, this will be the last 149er that you will receive. Don't drop out of "The Worlds Largest Patriotic Service Organization" as we work hard for our Veterans, Children & Youth and Community. I am in the process of updating the Aux. Roster. If you would like your birthday, month and day, not year and or e-mail address listed in it, please let me know ASAP. 741-1813. Thanks For The Memories!!
Chaplain – Elda Jones

By the time you receive this you will know we had a great 4th of July. We had a lot of help. Many hands make the work not as hard.
I know that Kitty is in Colorado with her daughter. She needs our prayers. If you want to send her a card, call me and I will give you her address.
My prayers are for a good year with our new President, Linda Lopez. She will need our patience and all the help we can give her. God Bless.

American Legion Riders

President – Woody “Gunny” Harris

The Flag, hot dogs, and fireworks: all things truly American were evident on the 4th of July at Grape Day Park. Your American Legion Riders Chapter 149 had a good turnout to help support the Post and show all that The Legion is well represented in the community. We had a booth selling all the implements to make the 4th a memorable event. Special thanks to Post Commander Marty Nielsen, Post Adjutant Joe Watt and all of the riders who helped set up our booth, and participate in this annual event. From all indications it was highly successful and the late night fireworks were spectacular. We take away a spirit of what it means to be American and see people of all colors, and cultures enjoy a common thoroughly American experience.
"Keep you face in the Wind." Good Day to All.
