POST AND MEETING NEWS

Commander Martin Nielsen called the monthly meeting to order on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 7:00 PM. Following the opening, officers and committee chairmen made their regular reports. We were privileged to have one of our Boys State attendees who was selected to Boys Nation speak to us about his experiences.
The by-laws changes were presented for review. These will be voted on at the September meeting. It was announced that a special ceremony will be held commemorating the 9/11/01 attacks at 5:00 PM on Monday, September 11, 2006 at Grape Day Park. We have also been invited to attend POW/MIA ceremonies at Camp Pendleton on Friday, September 15th.
Due to the scheduling of the Patriots’ Day ceremonies, the September Board of Directors meeting will be held on Thursday, September 14th.
Commander – Martin Nielsen
First of all, I want to thank all of you for coming down to the post for my retirement party. A special thanks to Cathy, Joe, and all those who helped put this together. We say good-by to Bobby Lane and Miss Kitty, I know they will be very much missed. Thanks to all of you that have stepped up and cooked a Friday night dinner. The meals have all been wonderful and I know that they are provided at a good price for all of us to enjoy.
September 11 is “Patriots Day” and the city of Escondido wants us to come down and be part of its celebration by helping to read all the names of those Firemen and Policemen at the World Trade Center and the Military from San Diego County who lost their lives on that day and since. We will move the E-Board meeting to Thursday, September 14 at 7 PM.
Membership, we are off and running. We have submitted nine transmittals to Department to the tune of about 450 members that gives us a renewal rate of 45.6%. God bless AMERICA!
Chaplain – Louis Miller
Two members, Larry McCormick, and Bobby Lane transferred to Post Everlasting last month. Please let me know if you know of any members who are ill, or have passed away.
Adjutant – Joe Watt
It's the time for Legion year 2007 renewals. I am in the process of working on approximately 560 renewals sent in within the last 30 days. We are computerizing our master Post list and gathering information about our members as we process renewals. You will be receiving a form to fill out about yourself, Please fill in all the information that you want us to know. We will not share this information with anyone for commercial purposes, it is for Post use only. Thank you for your patience. Remember your 2006 Membership card is good until December 31st.

American Legion Auxiliary

President – Linda k. Lopez
At our August 3rd Auxiliary meeting, we welcomed our District President, June Coatney, and District First Vice President, Pacita West. We had a feast. Thank you ladies for bringing all the food and beverages. June and Pacita had nothing but nice things to say about Unit 149, its members and meeting organization. It was a pleasure having them join us.
On Wednesday, August 9th, the Auxiliary met with Marty and Joe to discuss upcoming events at the Post. One such event is the annual Yard Sale on September 23rd, from 7 am to 4 pm. Please bring your items to donate, such as clothing, toys, books, and food. Bring them no earlier than one week prior to the event, or the day of the event, and place a price tag on your items as to how much you want them to sell for. This is a huge fundraiser for the Auxiliary, so please join us. We can use some help selling as well. Contact Elda Jones, Irene Gustafson, or myself or leave us a message at the Post.
From now on, the Auxiliary is not to leave any leftover food in the refrigerator unless it is dated and in the same container it was bought in. Take everything home. Clean up everything after use. Gus put a list in the kitchen as to what needs to be done after kitchen use and the back patio use. We will do a check off list prior to and just after our events and turn them into Joe Watt. This will be the responsibility of the Chairperson. Please give me a copy of this checklist for our records. I have instructed Angel Ho to buy a few larger containers for our use for leftovers.
Thank you to all the ladies who helped on the Sunday, August 6th breakfast. They are: Doris, Marie, Mary, Francis, Angel, and our newest helper Elise Chavez. Elise will be helping out at as many of our functions as possible. Please let me know when you need her and I can give you her phone number.
Thank you to the ladies who signed up so far for the upcoming events such as Sunday breakfast, Wednesday burgers, and refreshments for our meetings. If you haven’t done so, and would like to, please contact me to sign up for one of these functions, or just let someone know you would rather just help instead of chairing it.
Marie is our next refreshment chairperson for the September 7th Auxiliary meeting. Irene is our next chairperson for the September 3rd breakfast. For our September 13th burger night, our chairpersons are Carolyn and Frances. The Auxiliary is to bring desserts for refreshments following the September 11th Patriots Day ceremonies.
Auxiliary Membership – Irene Gustafson
At the annual Convention in Fresno, District 22 won 158 awards. J. B. Clark Unit 149 carried away approximately 50 of them. Unit 149 was awarded First Place for the Best Unit Activity Report & Supplemental in the State of California. The Colleen Award plus $100.00 is to be used for the Education Program. This activity report showed participation in our major programs - Americanism, Children & Youth, Education, Legislative, Poppy, and VA&R. Also, our Legislative Chairman got 1st Place for her report. It is being sent to National for judging. All the awards would not have been possible without the help, input, and cooperation of all the Unit members. Thank you for all you accomplished, donations, volunteer hours, and miles
Due to a snafu at Department, I have not yet received the 2007 membership cards. As soon as I get them, I will mail you your card. Sorry for the delay. Thanks for the Memories!
Chaplain – Elda Jones
I guess everyone knows that Kitty Boronda has passed away. We draped the charter on her behalf. She will be greatly missed.
We were dark the months of May and June, but I called on several sick members and sent out get-well cards. I also helped with the memorial for Kitty and helped with serving the food. Thanks to the Post and all the ladies for all the help. Thanks to you, the memorial went well and the family was very pleased.
“God allows trials in our lives, not to impair us, but to improve us.”

Sons of the American Legion

Adjutant - Martin Nielsen
Membership is off with a bang. We just sent our first transmittal for the year with 26 renewals and new members. Our goal for 100% is 66. I know we’ll get there and then some. Legion members, I know your dad or grandfather was in the military, sign up for the SAL and be a dual member. September 1st is Cook your own Steak night. Cathy has her hands in it, so you know it will be good. September 23rd, we’ll be having a “Chili Cook Off,” see Dave Amsbary our 2nd Vice and give us your best crock of chili. For God and Country, always.

American Legion Riders

President – Woody “Gunny” Harris
The Chapter was informed of the untimely passing of our Brother Larry "Ghost" McCormick. Ghost suffered a heart attack and passed on July 15, 2006 at Tri City Hospital. Ghost was a former Marine and Vietnam Era Vet. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. A Memorial service was held in Oceanside with a full Marine Honor Guard.
July 15th was our 1st Annual "ALR Surf and Turf Run.” The Chapter members and guests rode through scenic areas of the San Diego Coast stopping at the Encinitas Legion Hall and other spots. We owe a big thanks to the Encinitas Post. They made a huge effort to feed us and quench our thirst on a hot Saturday. Post members and guests were all invited for the steak cookout with all the fixings on our patio that night. A Hearty thanks to all of our Legion Brothers and Sisters who participated.
August 4, 2006 will be a day to remember. The Chapter Riders rode to the USS Midway to attend CWO4 Martin “Uncle Marty” Nielsen’s formal retirement from 31 years active duty in the United States Navy. We were all awestruck with the history and traditions of the Navy. Marty's daughter Heather sang the Star Spangled Banner better than I have ever heard it, and she also read “Old Glory” with such feeling and spirit I wanted to go off to protect our cherished freedoms ASAP! Marty's middle daughter Christina, who is also in the Navy, attended as a Side Boy and I know his youngest daughter Tiffany, was with her Dad in Spirit as she is serving in Iraq. After the formalities, everyone came back to the Post for a feast prepared by Marty's friends.
I would like to thank Marty, Art, Jerry, Joe, Cathy, and all of the members, families, and friends who help make our chapter so successful. Until next month Semper Fi, Gunny
