POST AND MEETING NEWS

Acting Commander Rene Cortez called the monthly meeting to order on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 7:00 PM. Following the opening ceremonies, officer and committee reports were received. The minutes of the Board of Directors meetings were read and approved. Commander Marty Nielsen resigned at a special meeting called on October 3, 2006 effective that date. Adjutant Joe Watt also turned in his resignation effective October 15. Ed Landis was appointed and approved to fill the vacant Adjutant position.
Under new business nominations were opened to fill the vacant position of Commander. Fred Sidebottom was nominated and accepted. Motion was made and passed to set aside the bylaws and hold second nominations and elections. A motion was made and passed to have the Adjutant cast a single vote to elect. Following election, Past National Executive Committeeman Ed Landis swore in Fred Sidebottom as Commander.
The Board of Directors has voted to increase dues to $35.00 beginning with the 2008 Legion Year to compensate for the increased per capita voted on at the National Convention. The Post will need to start paying an additional $4.50 per member for all renewals received after January 1st 2007 so please get your renewals in before the end of the year.
It has also been voted on to accept Paid Up For Life (PUFL) memberships at a discount rate until December 15th so now would be the best time to get your Life Membership. This will save you hundreds of dollars. See the Adjutant for more information.
Announcements were made regarding upcoming activities including Thanksgiving, Christmas Parade, Children’s Christmas Party, and New Years Eve. The Post voted to suspend Friday night dinners on December 22 and 29 due to the proximity of the holidays. Commander Fred Sidebottom adjourned the meeting.
Jr. Past Commander – Art Lubben
Due to the fact that our new Commander has not had time to write an article I will take the opportunity. First, I would like to congratulate Fred Sidebottom on his election and thank him on behalf of the Post for accepting the position of Commander to complete the term vacated by Martin Nielsen. Let’s all support Fred as he takes on this task and remember that our purpose is to work together. In any organization there will always be differences in opinion about how things should be done. If you don’t like the way something is done, go to the person in charge or better still, bring your constructive suggestions to a meeting. Remember, the Clubroom is for fun and fellowship, not business.
This month the Veterans’ Day Ceremonies will be held at Grape Day Park followed by refreshments at the Veterans’ Memorial Building. Once again, we will have Thanksgiving Dinner at the Post. Please review the calendar page of this newsletter for all the upcoming activities. We need all the help we can get from the membership to accomplish these activities.
Adjutant – Joe Watt
I want to thank all of you that have paid their 2007 Membership dues as of this data and remind all of you that haven’t, please get them in as soon a possible. Edward C Landis is now the Post 149 Adjutant. Ed has many years experience with the American Legion, including being a Past National Executive Committeeman, Post Commander and Adjutant. Stop in and introduce yourselves. Ed has set the new hours for the Adjutant at Monday-Friday from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon.
The past year and a half being your Adjutant has taught me a great deal on the workings of Post 149 and the American Legion. I plan on being involved with Post activities and functions for the foreseeable future. Again, thank you for your support.
Chaplain – Louis Miller

We had three members transferred to Post Everlasting this month; they were Erben Brown, Fred Bergeron, and O. D. Dannenberg. Please let me know of other members who have past away, or are ill.
Law and Order – Carl Asher

The 15th Annual Jimmie L Hayes Memorial Law and Order program at your post is officially underway. The normal letters requesting inputs have been delivered to the Escondido Chief of Police and Fire Chief. The awards dinner and presentation is scheduled for February 24, 2007 at Post 149.
As in the past, I ask for volunteers to assist with the program. Volunteers needed are: Cooks, kitchen crew and servers; help with setting up/clearing and clean up after the event in the hall; greeters; someone to take photos, (I will furnish the digital camera with plenty of memory). If you would like to help out, please leave me a message at the Adjutants Office or clubroom or email ashercarl@aol.com.
By the time you have this issue I will have posted the "Booster Board" for those who donate to the program. If you give a monetary donation your name will be listed on the Booster Board and in the official program for the affair. Donations in increments of $25 will get you a complimentary dinner for the awards presentations and dinner. $50 will get you two dinners and so forth. This is our 15th year of presenting this fine program. Please get involved and enjoy your efforts.

American Legion Auxiliary

President – Linda k. Lopez
This year is going by so fast it will be New Years Eve before we know it. Thanksgiving is coming up soon. Ann Marie, Phyllis and Stella are working hard on putting together the food baskets. Our Americanism Essay Contest is taking shape with Ann Marie at the helm. With the yard sale behind us, which was a big success, we are looking forward to the VAVS Bazaar on Nov. 16th. They are looking for donations of new and used (in good condition) items. Contact Ann Marie Brown with your donations. Pacita West with the District is trying to setup a BBQ with the “Wounded Warrior Program” at Camp Pendleton for the soldiers and their families for “Make a Difference Day”.
Phyllis, Chairperson for Children and Youth needs donations for Head Start in the way of children’s clothing, sizes 2-5, and also toys. Eva Latz reported her Auxiliary breakfast and white elephant sale would be held on Dec. 3rd. Donations for the white elephant sale are welcome. Contact Eva Latz.
As our Poppy Chairman is unable to fulfill her chairmanship, this President will take over the Poppy Chairmanship. The poppies have been ordered and the poppy letters will be ready anytime. We want to thank Elda Jones for taking over the coupon clippings for National Security for the time being. Jackie Lay will take on the Music Chairmanship. Jackie also distributed the updated Standing Rules at our last meeting. Everyone is asked to bring in an article or any current event related to Legislative for our next meeting. Keep track of your Community Service and mileage, and turn it in to either Ann Marie or myself at our next meeting.
Angel’s breakfast was Sunday, Oct 1st. The helpers were Beth Lane, Mary Lacy, Magda, Elda, and Irene. Charlie, as ill as he is, made the delicious sausage gravy. We made a profit of $78.05. Taco night was Oct. 11th, and we made a profit of $83.91. Both profits will be put into the Americanism fund. So far this year the Wednesday nights have raised $1,241.92, not including the Oct. 11th profit.
November is the month to emphasize our love of our country. Let us teach our youths flag etiquette, patriotism, and support our troops and veterans. God Bless the Red, White and Blue.
Auxiliary Membership – Irene Gustafson

The "Early Bird" date is Nov. 10th and that means a free Friday Night dinner. Just present your 2007 membership card with the "Early Bird" stamp on it and receive a delicious spaghetti dinner. We are 64 short of achieving our Early Bird target date, so please help us by paying your dues.
We had a very successful "Parking Lot Sale" on Sept. 23rd and made a profit of $772.75. Thanks to all the helpers and all donations that were brought in by lots of our members. Helpers were Elda, Margaret, Edith, Ruth, Magda, Marie, Phyllis, Eva, Linda, Nancy and Legionnaires, Ralph, Louis, Fred, Don and Harvey. Hope I didn't omit anyone.
Also, I'd like to thank all the faithful members that come out once a month to fold bulletins. Last month we had 10 Auxiliary members and 6 Legionnaires. We can always use help, so if you’re available on the Tuesday after the Legion meeting, come over at 2:00 PM and give us a hand. Thanks for the Memories!
Chaplain – Elda Jones

My, my, another month has gone. (It couldn’t be I am getting older.) We had a good month. Some of the new members are getting involved and helping out with breakfast and folding the bulletin. Thank you ladies.
I made hospital calls and took plants to the ladies. We had a great yard sale too. A big thanks to all who helped. Once again, I ask that you call me if you know of anyone is sick or just needs a card, “thinking of you.”
Prayer puts us in touch with God – our greatest caregiver.
Christmas Party Chairman – Stella Diaz

The Annual Christmas party is on Saturday, December, 16 beginning at 1:00 pm. Children under 10 will be treated to a hamburger and punch. This is by reservation only. Call Stella Diaz at 741-8172 for more information.
Community Service Chairman – Ann Marie Brown

A visit to Char, the Senior Advocate at the Joslyn Center was very informative and gratifying. She told us of some ongoing needs, and spoke of the various programs that need a helping hand. There is a need at the end of the month for food assistance for some of the senior clients. There is a small food pantry to help with these needs, but donations of canned soups, fruits, macaroni and cheese and light foods are welcomed. Previously the unit has collected canned soups, and at the next meeting I will propose this program.
They have a program that provides a shoebox of gifts for men and women. This is a decorated shoebox full of small gifts, and for some seniors who are alone, a very special treat. Christmas gifts are needed for this program. A list of articles for the shoeboxes will be given to those who wish to participate.
There are a number of veterans, male and female, among the clientele. Char will provide us with the names for Christmas baskets. So far, we have provided some warm throws, toilet articles, and some comfort articles. They were most appreciative.
The unit is busy with plans for the VA bazaar to be held in November at the V.A. Medical Center. We will provide craft items, baked goods, and items for sale to benefit the veteran patients. A special thanks to our ladies from the "Institches" group at Madrid Manor for the beautiful quilted lap robes they provided. We also have some great knitted caps from Elda Jones to take to the Saturday Bingo Sessions. Thanks to all of you who serve our veterans, seniors, and community.
Ada Jones

The Annual Holiday Bazaar and Boutique sale will be held on Saturday, November 4th from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM at the Veteran’s Memorial Building. For more information call Ada Jones at 745-0761

American Legion Riders

Secretary – Joe Watt

On September 30th, the American Legion Riders had a recruitment booth at the Heart Ride at the Del Mar fairgrounds. We had many inquires about the American Legion and the Riders and we signed up some new members for our Post. The Heart Ride is a charity ride to raise money for heart research. They did this with over 1500 motorcyclists in attendance.
Saturday, October 15th, the Riders participated in the National “Ride for the Kids.” This charity provides money for research into children’s brain tumors and cancer. This ride in San Diego County raised over $60,000. Now that’s some generosity on the part of over 500 bikers in attendance.
On the fun side of motorcycling, we rode to Orange County and entered in the American Legion Post 862 car and motorcycle show. One of our motorcycles took 3rd place in judging. The motorcycle was painted in an Army theme, olive drab and white stars with ARMY painted on the side.
We are going to help with the annual Thanksgiving dinner here at the Post. We invite all of you to come down with your family and friends for a great old-fashioned Thanksgiving dinner.
