POST AND MEETING NEWS

Commander Fred Sidebottom called the monthly meeting to order on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at 7:00 PM. Following the opening ceremonies, officer and committee reports were received. The minutes of the previous general meeting and Board of Directors meeting were read and approved. Sixteen new members were voted on for membership and three members received the initiation ceremony. The Bylaw revisions that were passed by the Post at the October meeting were rejected due to form by the 5th Area and the bylaws committee will be meeting to make the required revisions to present to the Post.
As you should be aware by now, dues will be increasing next year due to an increase in the per-capita rate from National. Dues will go from $30 to $35 per year. We will need to start sending in the additional rate to National beginning in January, so please renew before the end of the year and save the Post the extra money.
As an incentive, we are offering Paid Up For Life memberships based on a yearly dues rate of $20. The chart on page two indicates the cost of the life membership based on your age. For example, a 46 year old will save $370 if purchased now. If you order this before the end of December you can save a great deal of money. See our Post adjutant to order your PUFL now.
Commander – Fred Sidebottom
I want to thank the members for voting me in as Commander. I will do my best to carry out my duties for the good of the Legion.
The Veterans Day ceremony at Grape Day Park went very well. The highlight of the day was the patriotic songs by the children. Our 1st Vice Commander, Rene, and his crew did a great job putting on the lunch at the Post after the service. Thank you Rene.
We would sure like to see more members at our Post meeting. We will try to keep it short and to the point.
1st Vice Commander – Rene Cortez
Let me start by saying that I am sorry for taking this long to communicate with all of you. Now that membership is current, I must advise you of the totals. We have 794 members that have renewed which is 80.2% of our goal. We sent out renewal notices to our members who may have forgotten or lost their paperwork. I would also like to thank the many volunteers so far this year that helped the Post be this successful. God Bless you all.
Chaplain – Louis Miller
We had one member transfer to Post Everlasting this month, Wilburt (Burt) Phillips. Please continue to let me know of those who are ill or who have passed away.
Law and Order – Carl Asher
Your Post Law and Order program is underway for February 24, 2007. When you visit your clubroom, you will note the 'Booster Board' is up for our program. It is early yet but we wish to recognize our early 'Boosters': Lanny and Leslie Peterson; Fred and Ruth; Nancy Hanson; Ed Landis; Louis and Margaret Miller. You can be a Booster. All it takes is a donation to the program, any amount, it all goes toward the program. Your name will be posted on the 'Booster Board' and in the program.
If you wish to contribute in $25 increments, you will receive a complementary dinner for each increment donated. You can leave your donations with the Adjutant or in the clubroom. Ask the bartender for an envelope and mark your donation for Law and Order and provide your name. If you do not wish to have your name listed just mark the envelope for Law and Order and no name. If you contribute $25 or more and are to receive a complementary dinner, we have to know your name. Just say "don't list me" if you wish.
Boys’ State – Carl Asher
It won't be long until we receive the California Golden Boys State packages from Department. I expect to conduct the interviews in early March 2007, so please be thinking of that and how you can help.
I spoke briefly with Mr. Schneider, Superintendent of the Heritage schools in Escondido and Mr. Roner, Principal, of the Escondido Heritage High School. They are very pleased that your Legion Post wishes to sponsor a Junior Class boy to Boys State. I will be meeting with them, as well as the other 4 high school contacts as soon as I receive the Boys State packages.
Thank you Legionnaires for supporting the addition of Heritage Charter school to our list of sponsored schools. Just goes to prove: "Legionnaires care".

American Legion Riders

President – Woody “Gunny” Harris

November was a very busy Month for the Riders. On November 4th six riders rode to the Antelope Valley American Legion to participate in a poker run to support the Antelope Valley Legion Riders. Although a long day we had a great time meeting new Legionnaires and seeing beautiful country on the 95 mile ride. The whole trip was over 400 miles
On the same day our riders participated in a Purple Heart ceremony at the Del Mar Fair Ground's where U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer presented the award. A big debt of gratitude is owed to our fellow Legionnaire Mike Schuster. Mike was instrumental in securing the necessary documentation, and weaving through the bureaucracy to make sure the award was presented. For those of you who don't know Mike is the San Diego County Veterans Service Representative, and many of us owe our respect and gratitude to Mike for his caring effectiveness in getting the benefits owed to disabled Veterans.
On Saturday November 11th the Riders went on a pre-run with "Rebels with a Cause". The RWAC hosted, with our help, a Poker Run on Sunday November 19th to support a charity for children. The run benefits San Diego Children’s Hospital, BCAA, and St. Vincent DePaul. The run left Dalton's Road House and wove throughout San Diego County stopping at Legion Hall's, VFW's and three Hooters Restaurants who have given advertising, and space for the riders who participate.
Our Chapter is growing with over 20 riders now on the rolls. Three new members joined us at our meeting on November 15th. Master Gunnery Sergeant Lucio Frias, USMC (Ret) rides a Harley Davidson Fat Boy, and just completed 30 Years in the Marines. We also welcomed CWO Craig Harris USMC. Craig rides a Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe, and is on Active Duty. We were also privileged to have Tiffany Nielsen at our meeting. Tiff is a new rider and as some of you may know has a Harley Davidson Sportster which was customized by her Dad and Joe Watt. Tiff just got back from a tour in Iraq where she was awarded the Bronze Star, and Purple Heart medals. We really have some great people, and thank Our three new members for their service and thanks for serving our Country in the Iraq War. By the way Tiff is in the Army so we have a balanced group! Beginning in January 2007, the ALR will meet at the Post every 2nd Sunday at 8am for breakfast and go for a ride. The ride will be planned by an ALR member assigned at the previous ALR meeting.
