POST AND MEETING
NEWS
Commander Fred
Sidebottom called
the monthly meeting
to order on Tuesday,
December 19, 2006 at
7:00 PM. Following
the opening
ceremonies, officer
and committee
reports were
received. The
minutes of the
previous general
meeting and Board of
Directors meeting
were read and
approved. No
nominations were
received to fill the
vacant position of
2nd Vice Commander.
Commander – Fred
Sidebottom
The 5th Area meeting
went very well. We
received four
certificates, one
each for the Post,
the Auxiliary Unit,
the SAL Squadron,
and the Riders
Chapter. Howard and
his crew did an
outstanding job with
the help of his lady
servers, putting on
the dinner. Thanks
to all the fine help
we had.
December 6th a group
from the Legion went
to the Chula Vista
National Home to
help decorate for
Christmas. We had a
great crew to do the
job. Thank you very
much.
The December 9th
Christmas Parade
went well. The Post
float looked
outstanding thanks
to Joe Watt and his
helpers. The Riders
circled the float
all the way except
for one rider who
ran out of gas.
Thanks to all who
helped make it a
great day.
Chaplain – Louis
Miller
We had two members
go to Post
Everlasting this
last month. Lawrence
Ravago and Charles
Ho, past commander.
Please let me know
of any member who
have pasted away ,or
who are ill.
Law and Order –
Carl Asher
Each day it seems,
we read in the local
newspapers, see or
hear on the news of
the courageous
actions of our local
law enforcement,
fire science and
others in public
safety. All of which
we are thankful.
Everyday these
dedicated men and
women lay it all on
the line. We know
about that, don't
we?
At J. B. Clark Post
149 we are thankful
for their being in
and for our
community. Annually
we pay tribute to
those who serve in
public safety by
hosting our "Jimmie
L Hayes Memorial Law
and Order Dinner and
Awards Program". We
are very proud of
the program and it
shows each year by
your involvement and
unselfish
contributions, in
time, service and
funds.
This month we add
more to the growing
list of those who
have donated funds
to the program, they
are: Paul and Suzie
Hersey; Ralph and
Irene Gustafson;
Paul and Betty
Lochridge; Cathy and
Joe Watt, Bill
Henson; Joyce
Koppleman, Frank and
Doris Thomas, and
Lowell Grimaud.
Their names are
listed on the
Booster Board in the
clubroom and will be
listed in the
program at the
dinner on February
24, 2007. Your name
can be listed too.
How you ask? Well it
is easy. Donate
funds in any amount
to the program.
Leave the money at
the bar with the
bartender or with
the Post Adjutant.
Make sure you let
them know it is for
the Law and Order
program and who
donated the money. I
need you name(s) in
order to list them.
If you don't want it
listed, just advise
us when you donate.
You will receive 1
complementary dinner
for the awards
program evening for
each $25 donated,
but to get listed on
the board or in the
program, you may
donate any amount.
Promote Law and
Order.
Boys’ State –
Carl Asher
I spoke with the
State Director, Dick
Schick, Sunday,
December 10th. He
advised that there
is no fee increase
or transportation
cost increase this
year. It holds at
last years costs:
fees $265 and
transportation $100
per boy. We are
sponsoring 5 boys
now and I certainly
can use the
assistance of
Legionnaires in
interviewing the
delegate candidates.
I really do not have
a date for
interviews as yet,
nor do I have the
Boys State packages.
I expect to pick up
the packages in
January at Brawley.
The 5 schools we are
sponsoring are:
Escondido High,
Heritage Charter
High, Orange Glen
High, San Pasqual
High and Valley
Center High Schools.

American Legion
Auxiliary
President – Linda
k. Lopez
At the opening of
our ceremony Stella
Diaz announced we
had a distinguished
guest. We welcomed
Marian Marvel from
Oregon, who was one
of our Past
Presidents of Unit
149. It was a
pleasure seeing her
again. The ladies
all enjoyed her
visit.
Welcome to our new
members Denise
Latham and Johneen
Verbeck. Our
membership is at
88%. Thanks for a
great job Irene.
Please turn in your
Community Service
hours and mileage to
Ann Marie Brown.
Frances Mercado will
assist Charlotte
Young on National
Security by sorting
coupons and doing
the mailings. Big
thanks to both Ann
and Frances. It was
nice seeing
Charlotte Young at
the meeting as she
hasn’t been able to
attend these past
few months. She
hopes to come to
every meeting in the
future. Welcome back
Charlotte. Another
person I’d like to
thank for her behind
the scenes help
whenever we need it
is Magda Phillips.
She is the nicest
person you’d want to
know. All you have
to do is call her
and if it’s within
her power, she will
be there to lend a
helping hand.
At our November 2nd
meeting, a motion
was made to divide
the proceeds from
Wednesday night
burgers between both
Americanism and
Girls State. This
was seconded and
carried. In our
December 7th
meeting, Ann Brown
moved that we donate
$100 to the Blue
Star Mothers.
Another motion was
made to donate $100
to the Chula Vista
Veterans home for
their Christmas
fund. These were
seconded and
carried.
On December 6th
several Auxiliary
and Post members
helped decorate pod
400 at the Chula
Vista Veterans home.
Thank you all for
your help. Eva
Latz’s December 6th
breakfast and bazaar
went great. She made
a profit of over
$800.00. Frances was
the representative
for the Auxiliary on
the float in the
Parade on Saturday,
December 9th. Many
of us ladies went to
the La Jolla
Veterans hospital
the afternoon of
December 9th to help
out Ann & Phyllis H.
with the bingo. It
turned out to be a
nice event with lots
of food, lap robes
and prizes for the
Veterans, who
appreciated it very
much.
The District meeting
was held December
10th, at the Vista
Post. The Department
President, Sandy,
was on hand to
present the New
Charter members of
Warner Springs Unit
619, who has 14
members. It was an
auspicious occasion.
Six of the 14
members were in
attendance. In the
future, the
Americanism awards
check will be
written, cashed, and
placed in the
envelope to the
winners by both
Nancy and the
chairperson.
Membership is
outstanding for
District 22. The
Legislative
chairperson, Glenna
requested copies of
any letters you
write to
politicians.
At this time I would
like to apologize to
Joe and Cathy Watt
on behalf of the
Auxiliary Unit 149,
in not getting
enough deserts to
them for their
Thanksgiving dinner
on November 23rd. I
understand it was a
wonderful and
delicious dinner and
all who attended
enjoyed it
thoroughly. GOD
BLESS THE U.S.A.

By the time your
read this we will be
into the New Year.
December was a good
month for the
Auxiliary. We had a
great sale on
Sunday, the third.
Thanks to all who
brought baked goods,
white elephant items
and crafts. We also
had a good group of
women working, even
the mayor. Not much
else to say.
Everyone it seems is
pretty healthy. God
Bless.
“Pride and lust are
hidden stones over
which many people
tumble.”
Auxiliary Fund
Raising Chairman –
Eva Latz
I want to thank
the members who
worked so hard,
bought crafts, white
elephant items and
baked goods. Thanks
also to the
Legionnaires and
Auxiliary members
who came to
breakfast. We didn’t
make as much as last
year. Our total was
$880.95.

American Legion
Riders
President – Woody
“Gunny” Harris
As always,
December has been
busy for the Riders.
We started the month
off with the
Escondido Christmas
Parade. We had a
good turn out of
Riders, and the
Legion Float was not
only the best
decorated, but also
had aboard the best
looking Christmas
Cheer Leaders, and
Elves!. It started
out cold in the AM,
but quickly warmed
up with a good turn
out of spectators.
Many thanks to Joe
Watt, and Cathy plus
all the helpers who
made the float so
spirited. The next
day, December 10th,
was the Tijuana Toy
Run, the only
International toy
run in the world,
and Rick's Ride for
the Tail (led by
Legion Rider Rick
Wilson) to Puerto
Nuevo to give toys
to deserving
children and for a
Lobster dinner. On
December 14th the
Riders, representing
the Legion, went to
Fort Rosecrans
National Cemetery
for "Wreaths Across
America". This event
was simultaneously
held across the
United States at the
same time 9AM
Pacific, Noon on the
East Coast etc.
Wreaths were laid at
the Rotunda of the
Cemetery by members
of each service with
prayers being given
for current, former
and past service men
and woman who have
given up so much for
our freedom. The
Marine Corps Band
members played all
of the service
hymns, and the
ceremony ended with
Taps being played by
two buglers, one at
the rotunda and one
far away giving the
event a solemn tone.
I was remiss in the
last newsletter in
not welcoming
another new member
to the Riders. Lt.
Col. Tim Heck USAFR
(Ret) joining our
ranks. He spent a
career as a fighter
pilot flying the
F-15. As of now Tim
has the only
"Indian" motorcycle
in our ranks, but
were sure to get
more as his "Silver
Cloud" attracts so
much attention
wherever he goes.
Welcome aboard Tim
and also your lovely
friend Chrissy
Trevino who we are
hoping will join the
riders with her own
bike. Until next
Month Gunny
