POST AND MEETING
NEWS
Commander Fred
Sidebottom called
the monthly meeting
to order on Tuesday,
January 16, 2007 at
7:00 PM. Following
the opening
ceremonies, officer
and committee
reports were
received. The
minutes of the
previous general
meeting and Board of
Directors meeting
were read and
approved.
A motion was made
and passed to
approve going ahead
with negotiations to
have Post 149 assume
the lease from the
city for the
Veterans Memorial
Building. It was
announced that Henry
Banks has been hired
as the new Clubroom
Manager effective
February 1st.
Commander – Fred
Sidebottom
Well, the holidays
are over, so we can
take it a little
easier. We had a lot
of people who worked
real hard here at
the Post. Thank you
all for a great job.
I hope everyone had
Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year.
It would be a big
help if we could get
more people to
attend meetings. We
need your input to
help us plan and put
on things you would
enjoy and come out
to.
Chaplain – Louis
Miller
We had one
member go to Post
Everlasting this
month, Allen
Stiermann. Please
let me know of other
members who have
died or who are ill.
Law and Order –
Carl Asher
The program is
progressing along
with more donations
coming in every
week. Thanks to the
latest to donators
to the program as of
January 12th, Mike
and Doris Stein, Ken
Kurka, Howard and
Marie Haworth, Henry
Banks, John and
Rebecca Lighthill &
"Ernie" Pyle.
A further thanks to
Joe and Cathy Watt
and Gilbert Renteria
for stepping up to
fix the dinner. I do
need volunteers to
work with Joe,
Cathy, and Gilbert
in the kitchen;
washing dishes,
prepare settings,
help with hall
setup, etc. Thanks
to John and Rebecca
for volunteering to
be official greeters
and to Lanny for
adding his photo
prowess to the
program. Please
contact me right
away if you would
like to help so I
can get your name in
the program.
You still have time
to have your name
added to the program
and to the "Booster"
board. Just donate
to the program. I
will ensure you are
added. Make sure you
tell the bartender
or Ed Landis that
you are donating to
the Law and Order
program and earmark
checks for Law and
Order. Donations in
increments of $25
will each get a
complimentary meal
on the evening of
the program. Joe
tells me they are
cooking the
following awesome
dinner that evening:
Roast Beef, Mashed
Potatoes, Gravy,
Vegetables, Rolls,
Dessert (maybe
Cathy's 'To die for
cobbler'), and
Coffee.
Plan on joining us
for this great
evening as we honor
our local law
enforcement, fire
fighters and
citizens who have
gone beyond the
normal activities of
their offices to
provide the safe
community in which
we live.
See you on February
24th. Social hour
begins at 5 PM.
Dinner is at 6 PM
and the awards about
7 PM. For those who
wish to join us for
the dinner and
program, the cost of
the dinner is $8.00
per person. Those
who participated in
the special $25
donation program are
covered.
Boys’ State –
Carl Asher
I hope to pick
up the packages at
the 5th Area meeting
in Brawley for the 5
high schools we are
sponsoring this
year. As soon as I
have the information
back from the
schools, I will
schedule the
Saturday morning
interviews at the
Post. I am planning
on sometime in
February to
interview. Thanks to
Commander Fred,
Howard Haworth &
Lanny Peterson for
stepping up and
being the first to
volunteer to
interview. That is
basically one team
and we should have a
minimum of 3 teams.
I will be asking
again once I have
the dates firm.
Clubroom – Henry
Banks
Come on down. We
have several events
planned. We will be
having a Super Bowl
Bash on Sunday,
February 4th. We
have invested in a
sixty-inch (60")
high definition TV.
We will have good
food and your
comrades will be
here for company.
Come down and let’s
party.

Thanks to all of
you that have
renewed your
membership, however
we are 14 short of
our goal. We are at
93%. Help to make
Unit 149 100%. If
you have a daughter,
granddaughter, great
granddaughter or
sister, sign them
up, as they would be
welcome too. Thanks
For The Memories!
We send our Prayers
and Get Well
messages to Annie
Chambers, Joan

Chambers and Joan
Dresch both had
surgeries.
Chaplain – Elda
Jones
Since last
month, we have lost
a member from the
Post, Charlie Ho,
and one from the
Auxiliary, Georgia
Tinsman. Keep these
in your prayers. We
draped the charter
for our lost member.
Things will be a
little quiet now
that all the
holidays are over.
Please remember to
keep me informed on
the illness of
anyone or anyone
that is in the
hospital. Thanks
beforehand.
I read in the “One
Forty Niner” that
Art Lubben wants
someone to take over
as editor. Art has
done a great job. If
anyone has the
knowledge to
takeover this job,
step up and take the
position.
May God’s Grace
shine on you.

American Legion
Riders
President – Woody
“Gunny” Harris
January is here
and we all have our
New Years
Resolutions crashing
and burning! New
Year’s Eve was great
and we want to thank
all who helped make
the party so grand
and memorable.
The Riders have been
busy. On January
14th we had a great
breakfast at the
Legion put on by the
SAL and after that
we rode through the
backcountry to Bates
Nut Farm in Valley
Center. We stocked
up on all the
goodies and rode
back to the Legion
or home to watch the
playoff game. Who
would have thought!
Well, we will keep
cheering for next
year! That evening
21
Legionnaires/Riders
and family met at
Alfredo's Italian
buffet in San Marcos
for our annual
banquet. It was
great seeing all of
our friends and
families having a
good time chowing
down on good food
and camaraderie.
We have two new
members to report
on. Carl "Skip"
Ertwine, Colonel
(O-6) USMC (Ret.)
joined our ranks.
Skip spent over 30
years in the Marines
and was an A-6
Intruder pilot. He
is a Vietnam Veteran
and rides a Goldwing.
We also welcome
Cyndie August.
Cyndie is a retired
1st Class Petty
Officer (E-6), with
over 20 years in the
USNR. Although she
has not made the
choice yet on a bike
she has a wit, and
demeanor that is
welcomed by the
Riders. Welcome
aboard Skip and
Cyndie.
The Riders are
preparing for the
State of California
Annual West Coast
Riders Rally to be
hosted by American
Legion Post 149
Riders. This event
will take place in
August 2007. We will
welcome upwards of
300 or more riders.
We have formed
committees for
Lodging, Food, and
Events. I will keep
you posted on our
plans and
developments.
The Riders are also
getting the planning
going on the "Run
for the Wall." This
event is held
annually from all
corners of the USA.
Its purpose is to
keep the spirit
alive for all
Veterans, the
POW/MIA issue, and
to show support for
our men and women in
uniform. The riders
go from all points
meeting in
Washington, DC on
Memorial Day for
"Rolling Thunder"
where hundreds of
thousands of
motorcyclists go to
the Vietnam Memorial
and show the world
how we care about
our country and
veterans. Many of
your Riders will be
taking part in this
ride across our
great land for this
event. I will keep
you posted on this
in future
newsletters.
Well, until next
month, Semper Fi.
Gunny

Editor – Art
Lubben
We are still
looking for a
volunteer to take
over as newsletter
editor. The
newsletter is
prepared using
Microsoft Publisher.
Input is received
from the officers
and members of the
Legion
organizations.
Although most of the
time it the previous
month’s newsletter
can be used as a
template, sometimes
it is necessary to
revise the layout to
accommodate special
reservation forms.
It would probably be
best if the editor
is a Post member,
but it would be the
decision of the
Commander if anyone
else would be
approved for the
position. See me if
you are interested. |
