POST AND MEETING
NEWS
Commander Fred
Sidebottom called
the monthly meeting
to order on Tuesday,
February 12, 2007 at
7:00 PM. Following
the opening
ceremonies, officer
and committee
reports were
received. The
minutes of the
previous general
meeting and Board of
Directors meeting
were read and
approved.
Commander – Fred
Sidebottom
I would like to
thank Joe Watt for
the great job on our
“disabled” rest
room. The work he
did was a job that
would have cost us
plenty. Also, thank
you to Don Hansen
for fixing the leak
on the west side of
the building digging
with the shovel and
by hand. The leak
was costing the Post
money. Also, thanks
to Harvey Latz for
helping Don.
On February 11th, I
attended the
District meeting
with our 1st Vice,
Rene Cortez. You can
really learn a lot
there. Many things
come up that you
don’t think about.
It was a great help
to your Commander.
1st Vice
Commander – Rene
Cortez
Let me start by
giving you the
membership numbers I
have received from
our Adjutant. The
total membership to
date is 930 which is
94% of our goal of
989. Please give
yourselves applause
for helping bring
these totals to
fruition. Until next
time: God Bless All
Of You.
Chaplain – Louis
Miller
We have had three
members go to Post
Everlasting this
month. They are
Harry Marley,
Bernard Voss, and
Charles Dotson. Our
prayers are with
their family. Please
continue to let me
know of members who
are ill, or have
past away. Thank
you.
Law and Order –
Carl Asher
Next month
(April) will be my
wrap up report on
this years Law and
Order program. By
all indications,
this year’s function
will again be very
successful. We will
be honoring nine
individuals from the
Escondido Police
Department. We are
pleased to add the
following
Legionnaires,
Auxiliary members
and friends to the
Boosters: Don and
Elda Jones; Larry
and Marilyn Lynch;
Jesse and Charlene
Longacre; Tim Heck;
Auxilliary Unit 149.
Thank you for your
support. For those
who might donate
after February 12th,
you will be noted in
the March issue of
the newsletter and
if before February
20th, you will also
be listed in the
evening’s program.
Thanks to the ladies
of Unit 149 for
volunteering to help
out. You're the
greatest, no doubt
about it! You all
are to be
congratulated on
helping make this
another great Post
149 event.
Boys’ State –
Carl Asher
The Boys State
packages have been
delivered to the
five local area high
schools. I have
scheduled the
candidate interviews
for Saturday, April
14th at 10:00 AM at
the Post. I need
volunteer
interviewers. If you
haven't had the
opportunity to
interview these
bright young men
from the Escondido
high schools, now is
your chance. Please
let the office or
myself know if you
would like to help.

American Legion
Auxiliary
President – Linda
k. Lopez
At the opening of
our ceremony, Stella
Diaz announced we
had two
distinguished
guests. We welcomed
Carl Asher and Joe
Watt. Carl talked to
us about the
upcoming Law and
Order dinner, and
cordially invited
the President and
her guest. Joe told
us of the plans for
4th of July. He
welcomes all
suggestions
regarding food
selection. Both Carl
and Joe asked for
the help of the
Auxiliary in making
these two events a
success.
Welcome to our new
member Marvel R.
Clark. Our
membership is at
100%. Way to go
Irene!
Please turn in your
Community Service
hours and mileage to
Ann Marie Brown.
Stella Diaz and the
ladies are
diligently working
on Girls State and
the interviews. They
are coming along
nicely. We’ve
already selected
some of the girls.
The March, Wednesday
night burger night
will be held in the
hall due to the cold
weather we’ve been
having. Please join
us for an evening
out at the American
Legion Post 149.
Phyllis Bradford
reported that many
of the Auxiliary
members helped out
with the Head Start
Christmas wrapping
and baskets to make
it a success. Great
job Phyllis and the
ladies!
Gigi Manno, our
Education
chairperson,
reported she sent
out scholarship
applications to our
major high schools
in Escondido with a
letter attached
explaining that we
are offering “Book
Grants.” She also
included the
American Legion
Auxiliary web site
for students who may
want to obtain other
scholarship
information.
Poppy week is coming
soon to your nearest
American Legion
Post. Ours will be
the week of May 20th
– 26th. Letters are
being printed as we
speak in preparation
of mailing them with
our April bulletin.
We have two schools
interested in doing
the Poppy Poster
contest this year.
At the January
meeting a motion was
made, seconded and
carried to send $10
to Elizabeth hospice
in memory of Charlie
Ho, and $10 to the
Loving Tribute in
memory of Georgia
Tinsman and Susie
Cortez’s father.
Election of officers
for Unit 149 is just
around the corner.
Get your thinking
caps on, as a
committee will be
selected at our next
meeting. God Bless
the USA.
Mark your calendars
for the American
Legion Birthday
Dinner on March 16th
at 6:00 PM. Cathy
Watt will be
preparing corned
beef and cabbage.
Please RSVP to Post
149 or sign the
sheet on the
Auxiliary bulletin
board. Hope to see
you there.
Auxiliary
Membership – Irene
Gustafson
We have made 100%
goal in spite of the
11 members that have
not renewed and are
now become
delinquent. We thank
all of you that have
renewed and made it
possible for us to
make goal. Please
welcome our newest
member, Marvel
Clark. Thank you for
joining Marvel.
Thanks for the
Memories!

Chaplain – Elda
Jones
Well it is
almost report time.
I need poems,
prayers, etc. for my
prayer book I will
be making.
We have had several
of our ladies that
have had surgery.
Margaret Miller had
her shoulder
operated on, Annie
Chambers her back,
and Joan Dresh had
part of her lung
removed. I know by
the time you read
this, these ladies
will be on the road
to recovery, but
they still need our
prayers. There has
been a lot of the
flu bug going
around, so everyone
keep safe. May God’s
grace shine on you.
“God always performs
what he promises.”
Past President’s
Parley – Eva Latz
April 1st we
will have the
breakfast. I hope
that all the Past
Presidents will come
out and help. We
need six or more
would be nice. I
hope we have a good
turn out. All
profits will go to
the Women Veterans.

The VAMC in San
Diego has completed
the “End of Life
Room.” On December
18, 2006, the VAMC
dedicated and opened
the room. The room
was created to allow
our veterans to
spend their final
days with loved ones
in a home type
setting. The room is
totally awesome.
This room was
dedicated as the
“Ronald J. Hanson
Room” in memory of
our Past Department
Commander from
District 22 of The
American Legion. A
public dedication
will be held on
Saturday, March 10th
at 11:00 AM at the
VAMC, 3360 La Jolla
Village Drive, San
Diego. All members
of The American
Legion, Auxiliary,
and friends are
encouraged to attend
this dedication.
My family and I are
so proud of Ron’s
accomplishments with
The American Legion
and this will be a
marvelous way to
remember him. We
look forward to
seeing you there on
March 10th.

American Legion
Riders
President – Woody
“Gunny” Harris
February as
usual has been busy.
On Saturday,
February 10th, we
held our first Rock
& Roll Dinner/Dance.
Due to some
miscommunication the
main hall was rented
out so the Riders
improvised, adapted
and overcame! We had
the party in the Bar
area, and I think
all who were there
had a great meal,
and outstanding
music from Neckbone.
I would like to
thank Cathy Watt,
Carrie, Tim, Top,
Jerry, Chrissie,
Cyndie, Vickie and
all others who made
this a success.
Cathy, and Carrie
put in a lot of work
on the wonderful
food, and if they
charged for this we
couldn't afford them
so make sure you let
them know.
We have a new member
and rider- Chrissie
Trevino. She has
purchased a Suzuki
(not a Bergman
Jake!) 850CC
motorcycle. It is a
beauty, and she is
very proud, and
looks forward to
riding with us.
Chrissie is a Deputy
DA for San Diego,
and a former police
officer.
The Riders have
adopted a road in
cooperation with
Cal-trans, and we
feel this will
reflect positively
on the Legion and
the riders. The area
is on Highway 76
near Fallbrook. Look
for our sign on the
highway!
That' all for now- I
will update on the
upcoming West Coast
Rally, and the ALR
Convention next
Month.
On a last Note, and
very important to
the Riders DC
"Smoke" Murphy
celebrated his 84th
Birthday at the
dinner on February
10th. Smoke was born
on Valentines Day,
but we celebrated
early. For those of
you that don't know,
Smoke rides daily,
and is a real
gentleman. During
WWII he was a
crewman on a B-17
Flying Fortress. May
you have another 84
Smoke! Until Next
Month, Gunny

So far I have
not found a
replacement to take
over as editor.
Since keeping up the
web site goes along
with the position,
we need someone who
is computer

tried to put this
off as long as
possible, but I will
need to step down
soon. If you have
the ability and the
wish to help the
