POST AND MEETING NEWS

Commander Rene Cortez called the monthly meeting to order on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 7:00 PM.  Officer and committee reports were received.  The minutes of the previous general meeting and Board of Directors meeting were read and approved.
1st Vice Commander, Joe Watt, reported that the Adjutant has issued 479 membership renewals and that, in addition to 104 Life Members brings us to a total of 583 members, which is over 57% of our goal of 1019.  He also announced that the Post will have a booth at the Escondido Street Fair on October 21st and that he and Legion Riders President, Woody Harris will visit Camp
Pendleton on the 2nd Saturday of each month to also recruit members.
Our Legion Family Picnic will be held on Saturday, September 22 beginning at noon.
Commander - Rene Cortez

Let me start by thanking all the persons who helped in the renovations of the clubroom.  Together, everyone helped each other to satisfactorily complete this project and now all of us can enjoy this great new clubroom.  We have a Chairperson for the family picnic, Ralph Gustafson has volunteered.  He will need some helpers so talk to him if you can help in any way.  God Bless You All.

2nd Vice Commander - Ralph Gustafson
Don't forget the upcoming Legion Family Picnic on September 22nd.  There will be plenty of food and fun.  A sign up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board, so please sign it if you plan to attend and how many in your party that will attend.  We need to have an idea as to how much food to prepare.
Chaplain - Louis Miller

We had three members go to Post Everlasting last month.  They were, Richard Albright, Harold Akright, and Nicholas DiMaggio.  Please remember their families in your prayers.  Please continue to let me know of members who are ill, or have passed.  Thank you.
Clubroom

The Clubroom Committee for 2007, after a traumatic start, is alive and doing well.  We have a new bar manager, Mr. Tom Kemetovic.  He is new to our Post, so I hope all members will welcome him and introduce themselves.
As you can see, the remodeling is almost complete, except for a few minor details.  We have many people to thank for their time and effort in this work.  As is the consensus of the Clubroom Committee, we will not name persons by name for their efforts.  All who have been at the clubroom over the past several weeks, know who have been working.  These people are prominent and we wish to exclude no one by name.  As I said, these people have been there day after day, and their identities are known.
We have some new toys at the clubroom already, thanks to Tom.  A new juke box/music system and a darts game have been installed.  We are currently taking donations for two 37-inch televisions.  In less than one week, we have had enough donations ($700.00) for one of the new televisions.  We are doing great and want you to come down to support your clubroom and see the results of all the hard work and money spent.
Although we do not mention names of individuals, we do need to mention, sponsors.  We would like to thank Mr. Scott Berg of Electrical Supplies Unlimited for his generous contribution of electrical supplies needed during our renovation.  Also a big thank you and job well done to G&B Woodworking for the outstanding, professional, work constructing the new bar and donating the bar installation.
Howard and Marie Haworth

We wish to thank all of our friends for the party that you gave us on July 15th.  I would say that it is the first secret at the Post in the last 50 years.  It was a beautiful buffet and gifts and we appreciate all your planning and organizing to pull it off, especially Lanny and Leslie Peterson.  What a great job.  Thank you all.

Auxiliary Membership - Irene Gustafson

We welcome the following new members to our Auxiliary: Vicki Feria, Diana Brokiewicz, Dee Ann Brunner, Allison L. Brunner, Toni Edgar, and Junior member Anna Janes.  Thank you all for joining.
The first membership target date is for 50% of goal paid by October 12, 2007.  That means I need 125 members to renew by that date.  Please send your dues, $20.00 for Seniors and $3.00 for Juniors.
We are still looking for someone to do the 50/50 drawing on Friday evening.  It only takes 2 hours of your time and the profit goes to the Auxiliary Children & Youth program.  Thanks for the Memories!
A Thought to Remember:  "The key to failure is trying to please everybody."
Special Notice:  Parking lot sale on October 6, 2007 from 8:00 am to 4:00pm.  Save all your saleable items for that day.
Chaplain - Elda Jones

I can't believe that the year is going by so fast.  Before we know it, Christmas will be here.  We are having our parking lot sale on October 6th.  Save all your good stuff and bring it down to the Post.
So far, all our ladies are staying pretty healthy except for one, Joan Dresch who is still having problems.  Keep her in your prayers.  Betty Huff had a pacemaker put in and is doing great.
May God's grace shine on each one of you.  "God's whisper of comfort quiets the noise of our trials."
Children and Youth Chairman - Phyllis Bradford

On August 4th, J. B. Clark Post 149 Auxiliary presented Hero Packs to approximately 40 children of Deployed Army Personal at a Family Day Event at Camp Pendleton on the beach at San Onofre.  Thanks to the donation of the 50-50 drawing and a donation from the SAL, we were able to fill all the packs with needed school supplies.  The Riders gave a very generous donation for McDonald's gift cards.  Berney De La Cruz, Project Director, introduced LTC Gilbert Martin, CO of the 63rd Regional Readiness Command.  This was the first time an event was held in this area.  LTC Martin talked about how he can only deal with The American Legion or the VFW.  He is now trying to set up talks with the Marine Corp for more events in this area.  SAL. Commander Ray Bradford and Legion Rider Jerry Kraft were recruited to cook hamburgers and hot dogs.  It was a great learning experience.  Those in attendance were Ralph Gustafson, Jerry Kraft, Ray Bradford, Magda Philips, Stella Diaz, Irene Gustafson, Ann Marie Brown, and Phyllis Bradford

American Legion Riders

President - Woody "Gunny" Harris

We are having a great August, and had a busy July.  On July 29th, the Riders hosted the Legion Riders Area 5 meeting.  Over 20 riders attended from Area 5 including Midway City Chapter 555, Palm Springs Chapter 519, our own Chapter 149, and interested parties from Barstow.  Jake Jacobsen, Area 5 Vice President, presided.
We started August with a donation to the Army Reserves 63rd Regional Readiness Command's beach day and family benefit party held on August 4th.  This event was spearheaded by Phyllis Bradford.  The Riders, as their part, donated $200 for forty $5.00 McDonalds's gift certificates.
On Sunday, August 12th, our monthly ride took place.  Harley Joe Watt led seven Riders and two guests, Dwayne White, Retired Escondido Chief of Police, and "Big Jim," also a retired EPD Officer.  We left the post at 8:00 AM and rode old Highway 395 to Temecula for breakfast at Penfolds.  We then rode through Wildomar, up the Ortega Highway, and over to San Clemente.  Lunch was Italian and afterwards we rode old Highway 1 as far as we could then back to San Diego.
We are planning for upcoming events that include the National Convention in Reno, Nevada at the end of August, the West Coast Rally being hosted by our Chapter in October, and more to come.  Remember 2007-08 dues are now due!  Until Next Month, Gunny

WASHINGTON, D.C.

U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) today praised the passage by unanimous consent of his bill (S.1877) clarifying U.S. law to allow veterans and servicemen not in uniform to salute the flag.  Current law (US Code Title 4, Chapter 1) states that veterans and servicemen not in uniform should place their hand over their heart without clarifying whether they can or should salute the flag.
"The salute is a form of honor and respect, representing pride in one's military service," Senator Inhofe said.  "Veterans and service members continue representing the military services even when not in uniform.
"Unfortunately, current U.S. law leaves confusion as to whether veterans and service members out of uniform can or should salute the flag.  My legislation will clarify this regulation, allowing veterans and servicemen alike to salute the flag, whether they are in uniform or not.
"I look forward to seeing those who have served saluting proudly at baseball games, parades, and formal events. I believe this is an appropriate way to honor and recognize the 25 million veterans in the United States who have served in the military and remain as role models to others citizens. Those who are currently serving or have served in the military have earned this right, and their recognition will be an inspiration to others."  This Bill was passed July 25, 2007.
