COMMANDER | GEORGE CHRISTENSEN
Greetings Comrades,
Lots of activity in the news, and I would be remiss in my duty if I did not address the assassination of Charlie Kirk. First let me state unequivocally that assassination is never an acceptable means of political discourse; no matter what the political views of the victim may be. We all took an oath to support and defend the constitution of the United States and the first amendment guarantees that right without regard to political affiliation.
We represent the American Legion and what it stands for as well. The Federal charter granted by Congress establishes that the organization must remain nonpolitical (i.e. it may not endorse candidates, nor promote partisan political activity). While we have a right as citizens to participate in political activities of our choosing we must be careful that our participation cannot be construed as an American Legion endorsement of that activity.
Article II, Section 2 of The American Legion Constitution:
“The American Legion shall be absolutely non-political and shall not be used for the dissemination of partisan principles nor for the promotion of the candidacy of any person seeking public office or preferment.”
Members may, as private citizens, support or promote candidates, but not in their capacity as representatives of The American Legion. Wearing official Legion uniform items (or cap with Legion emblem) to partisan political events is disallowed if it implies that the Legion is endorsing or involved. There has not been a national statement from one of the American Legion national headquarters, nor do I expect one.
On a lighter note, the post Boys/Girls State and Oratorical fundraising dinner October 24th is moving forward. I have had RSVP’s from members of the Escondido Unified School District and others. All members are invited to participate flyers have been distributed at the Post or you can search Legion on Everbrite for more information.
I need help with this event, specifically a crew to help prepare and serve the dinner. If you can volunteer contact myself or the Adjutant Cody York.
Yours in Service
George Christensen
