COMMANDER | GEORGE CHRISTENSEN
Greetings Comrades
So many things happening at our Post, hard to know where to start. It’s important that each member votes in the upcoming election. I received my mail-in ballot and got a notice that is was received and counted. I read that a large distributor has to do a meat recall. That’s because grocery stores don’t know where the beef comes from. The Post has a Meat Raffle going and we know the source of our beef it is Mariposa Ranch a California rancher providing Grass-Fed Grass Finished beef. We are raffling a 10 pound box of various cuts from Mariposa Ranch. This is a post fund raiser and the proceeds will go to support Veteran and Community Programs. Tickets are $10 and available from the bartenders, myself, the adjutant, Rafael DelVecchio, and Jim Botts. If you want to sell tickets to friends and relatives see Cyndie August she will set you up. Only 149 tickets will be sold and you don’t have to be present to win.
Commander’s Breakfast
The Commander Breakfast goes the third Sunday of each month from 9:00 to 11:00. We have lowered our price to an unbeatable $10 a plate. I am there along with past commander Jen Holden, to answer questions and concerns, and just share some camaraderie. Come meet our new member Tommy Cruz who is a professionally trained chef, and is helping Rick Duro prepare breakfast to order. Service is fast, breakfast is tasty, and the company is super-friendly.
Post Renovations and Repair
At an Executive Committee meeting some time ago we prioritized Post renovation projects starting with the repair to the Women’s rest room in the hall. Thanks to Kevin Wood and his assistant and some technical help from (Art) that project is almost complete. Our second priority is to rebuild all the Pergola’s in the backyard and that project is on track to be completed before the end of November along with rebuilding the outside hot water closet. We are not done, our list of projects seems to grow every month. Without the help of member donations we would not have come as far as we have.
I asked the membership, those that could afford to, to donate $100 one time to the renovation fund. I pledged to donate $100 each month, and in October, before the general meeting I used Zelle to make my donation. Most banks and credit unions offer Zelle to members with no charge. This is quick and easier than writing a check for the donor and the Post. You won’t find the Post in Zelle as American Legion Post 149, instead search for J.B. Clark Post No. 149 and you will find us. My thanks to all who have donated, and I continue to ask those who have not to give one time to upgrade our post.
VETFEST
When this newsletter comes out VetFest will be upon us, but even then it is not too late to volunteer to help out, especially with the parade. We need parade marshal’s to help with traffic management and to help set up the post. Go to the website www.northcountyvetfest.org to sign up.
Buddy Check
In October we started a phone campaign to do a Buddy Check of our members. Mike Frank the First Vice is did a great job organizing it, but we were short of volunteers. Besides checking on the welfare of our members we reminded them of the importance of membership renewal. Cyndie August had four renewals. If you would like to volunteer contact Mike or Cyndie the Adjutant.
Fun, Fun, Fun
We are looking to bring fun events back into the post. We have Bunco, line dancing, Karaoke, canning class and occasional live music. In the planning stages are a Cornhole tournament, a casino night, possibly bingo and other activities. We need members to participate in sponsoring and working these events. Yes, I wrote working the events as it takes effort to host something all will enjoy. If you have ideas, bring them to the General meeting and present your idea under “Good of the Legion”
Chaplain
Harold Olson our Chaplain will be relocating to Missouri soon. Tommy Cruz has stepped up to replace him as chaplain. To give you an idea of how valuable Harold’s service to the post has been we need to also replace him as the service officer, and we need to replace him as the youth activities chair, to handle Oratorical and Boy/Girls state. Now is the time to answer the call!
Yours in Service
George Christensen
